Chapter 8

Rule #8: Friends will get you through anything. Do your best to make as many as possible this summer. It can be a cruel business, otherwise.

By the next day, Caleb was still reeling from the night before. Sensual memories he was going to be reliving even as an old man still swamped him and made it very difficult to plan a media announcement.

Still, he knew the “no sex” agreement he’d made with Valeria was the right one. Too many more nights like that, and they’d never be able to live apart—and then someone would have to give up an aspect of themselves they needed very dearly, indeed.

Unable to stop wondering how in the Hell he was going to find a way to make this work, he’d spent the morning making plans for the announcement with Elliot and most of the afternoon in his room making calls. Making his situation more precarious was the fact that, if he didn’t find a way, the least of his worries would be that he’d be so distracted with sorrow on this next job that he’d probably never get another.

The first of the more personal calls—after various ones to find caterers and get his agent to start with press releases and such—had been to his Gran.

Of course, he hadn’t gone into too much detail about what had happened, as all of this had started as a way out of the debt she kept pressing on him to recoup. As usual, she took it all in stride.

It was a little difficult to know how much to say, as well. He wanted to let her know it was real, but he also didn’t want to give away any of Valeria’s secrets.

Not that Gran couldn’t have taken them. She was a saucy enough old wench to hear even the grittiest detail and merely laugh in pleasure that he was enjoying himself, although he hadn’t actually confirmed that he and Valeria were lovers.

Still, he had asked her just how he was supposed to make this relationship work.

Her answer had gone something like this:

“Do you love her, Addie?”

Without a doubt, he confirmed it, and he was no longer playacting for her benefit, if he ever really had been.

“Then you’ll figure it out.”

And with that, she’d pretty much ended the call, which left him no more enlightened on any path to save them.

He’d wanted to ask his mother next but knew calling would worry her, and he didn’t think anything he wanted to ask could be covered in a text.

That left him with only one good option, which was a call he needed to make, anyway.

But he didn’t know why he bothered. Asking Andrew anything serious was always a fool’s errand.

Nonetheless, he tried, and, amazingly, actually got him on the second ring. Apparently, he’d caught him in his trailer on a lunch break, with at least three ensorcelled girls he’d met around town hanging on his every word.

After the usual formalities, Caleb tried to hint that this was something more than his usual rant against whatever was irritating him.
